The Team

Binney was formerly an operational Police Officer in both Kent and Leicester, She was seconded to Leicestershire & Rutland Crimebeat in 2001, managing the awarding of grants to youth groups and running the day to day business of the charity, as well as working with Alan to run a 2 week temporary safety education event for Year 6 pupils. In 2005, Binney was appointed as Project Manager to set up Warning Zone. She left the Police in October 2006, when Warning Zone opened and became CEO the responsibilities of which had increased greatly with the employment of staff and increased financial turnover.

In 2010 Binney completed a Post Graduate Diploma at Cass Business School in Charity Marketing and Fundraising, which resulted in the award of MInstF (Cert) from the Institute of Fundraising of which she is a member.

Binney is married and in her spare time enjoys outdoor activities such as mountain biking, climbing, coasteering and skiing and competes in the odd triathlon and (even more oddly) jumped out of a plane for the charity. She is passionate about young people being able to enjoy being young and active whilst understanding risk and taking responsibility for their actions.

Alan was born and educated in Loughborough. After leaving school in 1974 he joined the Leicestershire Constabulary as a Police Officer which kept him busy for the next 30 years. During this time, as well as operational roles, he was involved in a variety of partnership positions dealing with community safety and crime reduction, ending his police career at headquarters with responsibility for youth issues.

After retiring in early 2005, he became the first employee of Leicestershire & Rutland Crimebeat and assisted Binney in setting up Warning Zone. As Centre Co-ordinator, he works closely with the CEO and has additional specific responsibilities for managing our fantastic team of volunteers, which from his point of view is a great bonus. Alan feels that being a part of developing and running Warning Zone from the beginning has been one of his most fulfilling experiences.

Alan is married and still lives in the Loughborough area. Sailing is the hobby he enjoys with his wife; working as a volunteer signalman on the Great Central Railway is the hobby his wife prefers him to enjoy on his own!

Rachel recently returned home to Syston after working for an event management company in the U.S. for 15 years, She started working at Warning Zone in 2009 as an Admin Assistant and soon moved into the role of Volunteer Assistant giving Alan some much needed support. She also acted as a Visit Manager and a guide for school visits when necessary. She continued in this role for the temporary ‘On the Road' programme in 2010 and is now developing the new position of Community Fundraiser for the charity.

Rachel sees this as an exciting challenge and is looking forward to building relationships with individuals and groups who wish to help ensure that Warning Zone is able to continue its important work.

She has two daughters who keep her extremely busy when not at work so chocolate is an important factor in sustaining her energy levels.

Paula started working at Warning Zone in May 2006 as a temp, working with Binney and Alan setting up the administrative procedures and dealing with the school bookings. She became employed by the charity when Warning Zone opened in October 2006, also assisting Alan with volunteer recruitment. Like all the staff, she is trained as a guide enabling her to help out with school visits as and when necessary.

Her role now also includes some accounting and looking after the website and social media updates. She is becoming Warning Zone's resident computer expert.

Along with Binney and Alan she is First Aid trained. She also holds a Food Hygiene certificate but has yet to achieve her ultimate goal which is to get her black belt in origami!

Paula is married with twin daughters and enjoys walking, particularly in the Lake District.

Carl has 30 years operational fire-fighting experience gained at various locations throughout Leicestershire and remains employed by Leicestershire Fire and Rescue Service as an Educator in the Community Safety Team. This role has involved Carl in delivering fire safety awareness sessions to children, adults and other vulnerable members of the community.

He volunteered for secondment to Warning Zone in April 2011 and is enjoying the challenge of a change of career direction which still enables him to call upon his skills and experience.

In his spare time, when he takes a break from all the practical projects he involves himself with at home, he enjoys caravanning and the countryside. He also wonders how he was recently talked into owning and tending chickens...  Carl is married and has two grown up sons.

Peter has also spent 30 years as a fire fighter and served at stations in Leicester City, Leicestershire & Rutland. After retirement in 2001 he was lucky enough to be asked to stay on as part of a new four man team visiting schools to deliver a fire safety message to children in both Junior and High Schools. For the last two years his role has widened to include giving fire safety advice to a much broader section of society including going into peoples own homes. Until recently he also helped run a youth group which he helped form.

Peter has three children and four grand children. One of his daughters lives in Australia which gives him and his wife a good excuse to go over there once a year. In his spare time he likes to walk or cycle, especially on his tandem if he finds a willing passenger. Like Carl, he also has a touring caravan and likes to get away as much as possible.
