Warning Zone goes on the Road
2009-09-24
Since October 2006, 15,000 Year 6 children from schools across Leicester, Leicestershire and Rutland have visited Warning Zone and judging by the feedback from teachers, pupils and parents, their experiences there have made a huge impression on them.
During this time, strong links have been forged with local agencies and industries concerned about the safety and well-being of children, the centre has been used regularly by staff from the Leicestershire Youth Offending Service and in April this year, Warning Zone became the very first Safety Education Centre to achieve the Learning Outside the Classroom Quality Badge.
The lease on Warning Zone's premises is now coming to an end and so while the search goes on for suitable new premises, Warning Zone has gone "On the Road".
Staff and volunteers are now travelling out to schools and working with 10 & 11 year olds in their own classrooms. A 90 minute programme has been devised in which the children learn about peer pressure, risk and safe decisions, anti-social behaviour and the consequences of crime.
Centre Co-ordinator, Alan Godber said,
"Whilst unable to take the well known Warning Zone high impact special effects into schools, we have put together a varied and involving series of classroom activities which deal with the same underlying issues we have focussed on for the past three years.
The first few sessions have been very well received by both teachers and pupils."
At the end of each session, teachers are given Warning Zone workbooks for each child enabling follow-up work to be carried out.
The Warning Zone On the Road team can be spotted heading to and from schools in a distinctively marked Peugeot car supplied by the Research Garage Group, Hinckley.
Schools who haven't yet booked for their Warning Zone on the Road session should call Paulaon 0116 260 4181.
